Personality Disorder Ukulele
This interesting ukulele is made of parts that would have become a maple back/sides concert ukulele and a rosewood back/sides concert ukulele. Some of the wood did not bend correctly and I was left with some great looking sides that would probably never match with anything else. The result is shown here.

I initially thought that this uke would become one of my own personal flock; after all, who would want a ukulele that couldn't make up it's mind about whether it was maple or rosewood? Well, before the ukulele was even finished, fellow uker Chris C. came along and said "I want that!" I've had a lot of fun playing this uke for a couple of days. Now it's off to build some more!

The face of this ukulele looks pretty typical, but when you start to turn it to the side or back, you realize that this ukulele has a dual identity. Rosewood on the left rim, maple on the right rim.

And then it gets better. Or worse. Or better. The back of this concert ukulele flips the rosewood and maple pattern the other way. Too bad you can't play this uke backwards!

The three-piece neck is mahogany/maple/mahogany. It's strong as heck and adds a little extra mass to the mix.

The headplate celebrates the multi-wood design by joining the maple that's on the side with a striped piece of African mahogany. Amber button geared Gotoh tuners keep this confused ukulele in tune.

The fingerboard and bridge are ebony, with a Tusq® nut and saddle. The saddle is compensated and does a very nice job of ensuring good intonation. The bridge uses a string-through method of attaching the strings. I've built a few of these bridges with great results. It's a very tidy look, and I feel that it increases the string contact with the soundboard. It's a little more difficult to string the first time, but after doing a few, now I find that the strings just curl right out the soundhole for you. It's all in the training of the uke, you see...

Here's a quick'n'dirty audio sample of this ukulele.
